I decided to find some of the “best” graphic novels and read one or two from that list. Surviving Religion 101 by Michael J.I’ve been picking up more graphic novels recently. But Craig Thompson is not someone you want to get your theology from.įurther Reading on How We Can Trust the Bible: And if reading this books spurs others to explore who Christ truly is, then by all means read this book. I hope he keeps searching and rediscovers the God of the Bible. But I just can't rave about a book that blatantly goes against all the truths I believe in. Again, I have no idea what all he went through and I can't judge him from reading this book. It doesn't seem like Craig did a lot of searching to come to the conclusion he did. If you really believe in a great and powerful God and Creator, couldn't he be powerful enough and love us enough, and be holy enough, to want to and be able to maintain the inerrancy of Scripture? That's basically the conclusion of the book which I feel doesn't make a whole lot of sense. He liked the idea of God existing but he didn't like the idea that the Bible was re-translated and misinterpreted numerous times by flawed humans- that the Bible was no longer God's truths and God's words. We follow Jesus and everything he stands for, if you use a middle man, you're not going to be satisfied, just like Craig Thompson wasn't. So it's a 100% guarantee that you will find 'hypocrites' or people who DON'T represent who Jesus is.Īnd it makes me sad that he had the leaders in his church and in his home that told him the lies they told him, but people aren't Christians to follow other Christians. People don't go to church because they have it all together, they go because they need Jesus. He got a lot of things right in reference to the church but he kinda misses the point. The reason my review is negative is basically that I just didn't agree with a lot of what he said. So my review below is not really in regards to the illustrations or writing style. I liked the metaphors he used and the details he included. I also thought the drawings were well done. I will say that I appreciated the honesty the author had.

Well it's hard to critique a book written about the author’s life experiences.
